December 17, 2008 - DO YOU KNOW WHAT A PHISHING ATTACK IS? A phishing attack is when someone calls you or sends you an email, phishing for information, in this case your debit card or ATM card number and pin number. On Sunday Indianhead Credit Union was one of many financial institutions in the Northeastern United States that was a victim of a phishing attack. Many residents, members and non-members, in Washburn County and Burnett County were called in this phishing attack. When residents were called; the caller (a computer) was identified as coming from Indianhead Credit Union. The caller stated that their debit card or ATM card was blocked because of fraud and they needed to input their card number with their pin number. As soon as the crooks have this information, they will start making fraudulent transactions against the account. Indianhead Credit Union does not make calls on Sunday or make calls to non-members. Also, Indianhead Credit Union would never ask for your card number, if y ou are a member we already have that information, and under no circumstances would we ask for your pin number. It is important that if you receive a call like this, DO NOT GIVE ANY INFORMATION, HANG UP AND CALL THE CREDIT UNION AT 635-8273 OR 1-800-645-9391 and tell the staff what happened. Anyone who gave them their card number needs to contact the credit union or call the fraud line at (800) 264-5578 that is also listed on our web site to have their card closed and identify any fraudulent transactions. The member does not suffer any losses because of a fraudulent transaction. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, do not respond to phone calls asking for information such as account numbers and do not respond to an email that is asking you to verify information. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
